What is Building Commissioning?

Building commissioning, also known as Cx, is a systematic and thorough process to verify that a building’s overall design and functionality is aligned with the building owner’s specified requirements. The Cx process ensures all buildings systems perform interactively according to the design intent. Building Commissioning is crucial for facilities seeking to be compliant with regulations and obtain sustainability certifications (LEED and Energy Star). Cx can be performed in a variety of ways: design review, functional, pre-functional, and retro commissioning. Each one is completed during a different stage of a building’s lifecycle.

When is CX needed?

During Design Phase or Pre-Design

It’s never too early to engage your commissioning agent (CxA). Consulting with us early makes the process seamless and successful through construction, occupancy and operations. Building commissioning is often required for commercial new construction.

Continuous Cx

Because buildings are alive and breathing, ongoing commissioning should always be considered. Consistently monitoring variations from established baselines can alert you to any problems.

Retro-Commissioning

It’s never too late to commission your building. Retro-commissioning can be done to improve or ensure energy efficiency and building health for existing facilities, resolving problems that may have occurred as buildings have aged. Experts recommend recommissioning every 3-4 years.

Case Studies

Why we do what we do

“We’ll build a 7 figure new store and we’ll fight with the A/C or negative air pressure for months or years, all because the equipment was never set up properly, causing problems that extend for the life of the building. Your reports allow us to know everything is set the way it should be from the beginning.”
