McDonald’s Northeast Region Case Study

Overview

This muti-case study shows the performance results for 40+ McDonald’s locations in the northeast region of the US. McDonald’s is a fast-food restaurant chain and the number one restaurant chain in the world. The study shows how an Intelli-Hood installation was able to reduce the facility’s annual utility costs and carbon dioxide emissions. Intelli-Hood is a controls system that controls the ventilation fan speed, depending on the current conditions of the kitchen hoods. Temperature and optic sensors are used to detect heat and steam, and these sensors will change the fan speed accordingly. With the rise of utility rates across multiple locations, Intelli-Hood was the proactive strategy for McDonald’s to offset increased energy costs with efficiency upgrades.

Results

In the chart below, Figure A, the average fan speed for the exhaust fans is shown over the course of two weeks. The dips in the chart represent times when the fans have slowed down due to reduced cooking intensity. While the spikes represent when the fans are operating at a greater cooking intensity and higher heat loads. The varying fan speed means the fans are running more efficiently rather that consistently at full speed. The average fan speed for these exhausts was 65%.

Figure B, at the bottom, depicts the customer’s annual energy costs as compared to their net energy costs. After installing Intelli-Hood, these locations operate at $73,806 on average for their utility costs. That’s a $75,774 annual savings across all sites, as compared to their previous operating utility costs.

Kyogamisaki Japan Site

Overview

The following case study reveals the savings results for a Company Operations Complex in Kyogamiska, Japan after an Intelli-Hood installation. Intelli-Hood is a controls system that controls the ventilation fan speed, depending on the current conditions of the kitchen hoods. Temperature and optic sensors are used to detect heat and steam, and these sensors will change the fan speed accordingly. The study shows the cost benefits of an Intelli-Hood installation as well as the key performance results.

Results

The graph below, Figure A, shows the average fan speed for two exhaust fans over the course of six days. The dips in the chart represent times when the fans have slowed, and the spikes represent when the fans are operating at a faster speed. The fan speed varies slightly which means the fans are running more efficiently. The average fan speed for these exhausts was 61%.

In the chart below, Figure B, the facility’s annual energy costs are compared to their net energy costs. After installing Intelli-Hood, this complex operates at $17,840 on average for their utility costs, with annual savings of $20,525. Which is a 53% reduction compared to the utility costs before Intelli-Hood.

JeJu Dream Tower South Korea

Overview

Jeju Dream Tower is a luxury hotel centrally located in the heart of Jeju City, South Korea. The Jeju Dream Towers are the tallest landmarks on Jeju Island. As a renowned destination spot, they
received thousands of customers a year. That is why representatives at Jeju Dream Tower wanted to integrate Intelli-Hood into their commercial kitchen. Melink’s Intelli-Hood system controls the ventilation fan speed, depending on the current conditions of the kitchen hoods. Temperature and optic sensors are used to detect heat and steam, and these sensors will change the fan speed accordingly. With help from Intelli-Hood, the customer wanted to decrease their utility cost and maximize their energy savings.

 

Performance

The chart below, Figure A, shows the average fan speed for the exhaust fans over the course of
several weeks. The dips in the chart represent times when the fans are not running, and the spikes represent when the fans are operating. The spikes in fan speed change slightly which means the fans are running more efficiently. The average fan speed for these exhausts was 61.4%.

Before their Intelli-Hood installation, the Jeju Dream Tower was spending an average of $106,048 in utility costs per year. Figure B depicts the customer’s previous annual energy costs as compared to their new energy costs. After installing Intelli-Hood, the Dream Tower cut their utility costs practically in half. They experienced a $51,759 savings by utilizing Intelli-Hood in their commercial kitchen.

Extra Supermarket Grocery Case Study

Overview

This case study reveals the savings results for a supermarket in Fiji known as Extra. Extra Supermarket’s mission is to provide their customers with a world-class shopping experience, the “Extra Experience”. That is why Intelli-Hood was the ideal solution for their store. The study shows how an Intelli-Hood installation was able to reduce their yearly utility costs with less than a year payback period.

Results

This case study portrays the utility costs savings Intelli-Hood helped Extra achieve in their new venue. Figure A depicts the company’s projected annual energy costs as compared to their actual energy savings. With the installation of Intelli-Hood, Extra cut their utility costs practically in half. They experienced a $14,713 savings by utilizing Intelli-Hood in their new facility.

Culver’s Restaurant Case Study

Overview

This case study reveals the continued saving results for a specific Culver’s location. The study shows an Intelli-Hood installation after nearly 20 years of use before upgrading, to continue the restaurant’s operational savings.

The Intelli-Hood system controls the ventilation fan speed, depending on the current conditions of the kitchen hoods. Temperature and optic sensors are used to detect heat and steam, and these sensors will change the fan speed accordingly. The owners of this Culver’s location saw the benefit in continuing their use of Intelli-Hood. This fast-food restaurant chain’s main goals were to continue to decrease their spending on utility costs and their operating expenses.

Results

Figure A depicts the customer’s annual energy costs as compared to their net energy costs. After installing Intelli-Hood, this Culver’s location operates at $5,668 on average for their utility costs. That’s a $4,020 annual savings.

Shake Shack Motor City Mall Dubai

Since its founding, Shake Shack has been one of the fastest growing food chains and now operates over 250 locations globally. Joining forces with international partner M.H. Alshaya Co., Shake Shack entered the Middle Eastern market and opened a location in the First Avenue Mall, Motor City. Shake Shack not only focuses on sourcing the highest quality ingredients, but also understanding the environmental impact of their restaurants. Through their partnership with KlimalGlobal they implemented Intelli-Hood kitchen hood ventilation controls into new Halton hoods to reduce their energy usage and help lessen their carbon footprint.

Arnotts Department Store

CONTEXT

Arnotts is the oldest and largest department store in Ireland. Their focus on high quality and luxurious goods make it a premier retail destination for Dublin shoppers. Attention to operating a high end shopping experience doesn’t stop in the showroom and wanted to ensure their kitchens were addressing any potential ventilation issues to decrease odor and energy usage. Through their partnership with EFTech they implemented Intelli-Hood kitchen hood ventilation controls and CleanStream UV-C technology to mitigate any future issues and control operating costs. The Intelli-Hood system controls the ventilation fan speed, depending on the current conditions of the kitchen hoods. Temperature and optic sensors are used to detect heat and steam, and these sensors will change the fan speed accordingly. For Arnotts, this saves about 77% of ventilation fan energy consumption. Reducing the fans from running 24 hours per day not only saves energy consumption from the extract and supply fans but also creates considerable heating and cooling savings.

RESULT

Petrol Station Case Study

CONTEXT

APCO, a local family-owned petrol station, was focused on finding ways to reduce their operating costs and lessen the environmental impact by reducing the amount of fuels being burned to power their locations. They identified their kitchen ventilation as a place of improvement and decided to implement a demand control kitchen ventilation system to self- modulate fan speeds based on cooking activity.

SOLUTION

They chose ecosense powered by Melink Intelli-Hood because ecosense uses site-specific information combined with performance data from thousands of previously installed systems so system performance can be predicted accurately.

At first, they decided to run a pilot program to verify the system was a good fit. Based on excellent preliminary results they decided to install two more locations and quickly had the same success. University of Dayton

As part of its commitment to sustainability, the University of Dayton in Ohio became a fair trade university and was the first Catholic university in the nation to divest from fossil fuels. This means UD is committed to renovating or building campus facilities that source power from clean energy, while providing a greener campus in which their students can engage. Solar energy plays a key role.

 

 

Solar Solutions

In 2018, Melink Solar & Geo collaborated with UD to install two arrays, totaling a combined 4,026 panels with a capacity of 1.26 megawatts of power. A ground-mounted array was installed at Curran Place, and a roof-mounted array was installed at Fitz Hall. As part of a long-term power purchase agreement, Melink engineered and constructed the arrays, selling the generated electricity to the university.

The solar arrays provide nearly 10 percent of the power consumption of both buildings, as well as power electric car stations at each location. UD has the option to purchase the arrays after eight years. Students, faculty, and researchers participated in the installation of the modules and incorporated the sustainability project into research and curriculum.

Result

This project helped to define UD as a sustainability leader in the Midwest, as well as among universities. The ground-mount installation resulted in a stunning living laboratory complete with a prairie garden — one of the first in Ohio — to attract native pollinators. The site is home to 81 species of plants that keep the ground cool for panel efficiency, increase the habitat, and create an experiential learning space for students.

The solar arrays provide about 2 percent of the power campus-wide and offset carbon emissions by about 1 percent annually. Over their 30-year lifespan, the university estimates a $300,000 savings and prevention of 39,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide being added to the atmosphere.

Benny & Co. Restaurant Case Study

Benny & Co. is a large, family-run restaurant chain based in Canada. Its specialty is roasted chicken, and its rotisserie ovens operate an average of 15 hours per day, 365 days per year. To address ventilation concerns and to help control operating costs, the chain decided to outfit its newly constructed locations with demand control kitchen ventilation (DCKV) systems that self-modulate according to cooking conditions. Thus, ENERGY STAR-rated VariVent™ DCKV systems featuring Intelli-Hood® kitchen hood controls by Melink Corporation, have been installed at 22 sites by Melink’s Canadian distributor/OEM partner ProVent HCE.

 

Benny&Co Restaurant

Result

Based on data collected from 19 sites, Benny & Co. reduced its average kitchen’s running fan speed from 100% to 60% with the implementation of Intelli-Hood. Before the DCKV installation, it cost $14,585 (CAD) yearly to operate a kitchen; this was cut nearly in half to $7,486. Each site’s system will pay for itself in just 1.7 years. With this system, Benny & Co. is not only able to reduce its immediate energy consumption but is able to use the technology to continually monitor usage and adjust as necessary.
